第5問 27 ~ 31
Work life balance is the idea that workers should have enough time away from work for their personal lives. This means not working long hours and having enough paid time off for vacations and life events. The idea has been particularly popular since the late 1900s, but it is by no means new. Laws were first introduced to the United States in the late 19th century to limit the number of hours women and children worked. The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 established the concept of overtime pay and the 40-hour work week came in 1940. It’s obvious how good work life balance benefits workers. They can enjoy more time off and have flexible schedules, improving mental and physical health. When it comes to companies though, the benefits are often overlooked. Employers often claim that work life balance is important, but most employers are only truly concerned with productivity and profit. The United States may be the wealthiest country in the world, but Americans are neither the happiest nor the most productive. In fact, when employers don’t support their workers, they actually hurt themselves. Unhappy workers are more likely to quit and hiring and training new workers is very expensive. In contrast, when employers emphasize work life balance, the workers become more productive and the employers enjoy higher profits. Studies show that workers are 12% more productive when they are happy. Both governments and employers can help. Governments can write strong laws to keep workers safe when they’re working, prevent bullying, and make sure workers are treated fairly. Employers can do their part by providing flexible schedules and creating a positive work environment.
第5問 32
Student A: Taking time for life events is harmful for work life balance.
Student B: Companies make more money when they let their workers take enough time off.
第5問 33
This article compares the United States with three other countries. Americans are reported to work more hours, but this graph indicates that Americans are less productive than workers in the other countries. Americans are less satisfied with their lives too. It makes sense that satisfied workers are more productive.
第6問 34, 35
Did you sign up for a chemistry class, Matt?
Yes, Nancy. There were five introduction to chemistry classes. I chose the one with Professor Gordon.
I tried to take the class with Professor Lee, but it’s full. Even though it meets at eight o’clock in the morning.
That’s early. Why do you want to take his class?
It’s the only one that includes a lab with lectures and readings.
That’s not important to me. Sometimes I watch videos of people doing experiments online. I can learn just as much from them.
I learn differently. I prefer doing experiments with my own hands.
I’d rather go to class at a convenient time. I learn better when I’m awake.
I wish the university had more labs.
That’d be expensive. I prefer they offer classes at different times. So, what will you do about the chemistry class?
I’m on the waiting list, but I may have to take a different chemistry class.
Good luck, Nancy.
Thanks, Matt.
第6問 36, 37
Sorry, I’m so sleepy today, everyone.
Are you getting enough rest, Ricky?
Yes, Freya.
But I went for a long run this morning, and I’ve been tired all day.
That’s funny, Ricky.
I actually prefer exercising in the early morning.
After I swim, I feel energetic all day.
I’m the opposite, Jenny.
I usually run in the late afternoon.
That makes me sleep well. The next day, I’m in a great mood.
What made you change, Ricky?
Some friends recommended morning exercise. So I tried it today, Jenny.
I wish I could play soccer in the morning, Ricky. But I have so many responsibilities before school that I can’t play sports then.
I’ve read there are health benefits to exercising early, Kevin. But my most important reason for exercising in the morning is that it’s easier to maintain the habit.
Why is that, Freya?
It’s difficult for me to start a regular fitness routine later in the day, Jenny. If I wait until then, something always comes up.
Or I don’t feel like exercising.
That’s funny, Freya. I look forward to running at the end of the day.
I’m different, Ricky. I go to the gym at 6 in the morning so I can concentrate.
I guess we are all different.
